Saudi man convicted of assault now faces civil lawsuit launched by victim
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – An international student at Thompson Rivers University has launched a civil lawsuit against a Kamloops, B.C., nightclub and a Saudi Arabian man who stabbed him in the eye with a pool cue.
Yousef Almotairi was convicted this week and sentenced to six months in jail for the November 2012 attack on Abdulaziz Alhedaib at Cactus Jacks Cabaret in Kamloops.
In a statement of claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court against Almotairi, Alhedaib alleges he suffered a traumatic brain injury, damage to his left eye and facial disfigurement.
He also alleges the nightclub was negligent because it didn’t stop the intoxicated men from drinking, didn’t intervene in the confrontation, the club was overcrowded and understaffed and didn’t employ enough security.
None of the allegations filed in the civil suit have yet been proven in court, although Almotairi was found guilty of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
Alhedaib is seeking aggravated and punitive damages. (CHNL)
