Proposal to bury nuclear waste in Ontario wins local support; sparks U.S. ire
KINCARDINE, Ont. – A proposal to bury nuclear waste deep underground near Lake Huron in Ontario is creating some odd alliances.
Ontario Power Generation says the waste would be safely entombed in rock chambers about 680 metres below the earth’s surface.
Instead of “not in my backyard” opposition, the project has strong support from nearby Kincardine and other neighbouring towns, where the nuclear industry is a major employer.
But it’s opposed by many people in places farther away — including Michigan, which shares Lake Huron shorelines with Ontario.
Members of Congress and other critics say it’s too risky to put radioactive waste so near the lake.
A panel that conducted public hearings is expected to make a recommendation to Canada’s government next spring.
