Man who drained grandmother’s finances sent to prison

MILFORD, Conn. – A Connecticut man who drained his grandmother’s bank accounts of nearly $200,000 and sold her belongings to support his heroin habit has been sentenced to more than five years in prison.

The New Haven Register reports that 30-year-old Joseph Ukanowicz was sentenced Thursday for first-degree larceny.

Authorities say Ukanowicz was one of several family members who moved into Karin King’s Ansonia home several years ago.

Prosecutors say he and his mother took advantage.

By the time King called police in 2015 her home had no power, water or heat. Her finances had been depleted, the copper pipes removed from the home and the furniture sold.

King died in 2015 at age 84.

Ukanowicz apologized in court.

Ukanowicz’s mother was sentenced last month to 4 1/2 years in prison.
