A man toting drugs and dog spray around on a bicycle in Vernon was chased down by a Vernon Mountie New Year's Eve, and arrested for obstruction of justice.

The man was pedalling along 30th Ave. near Alexis Park Dr. at 3 a.m. Dec. 31. A police officer in the area noticed the man didn't have any lights on him and pursued him.

"He activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the cyclist," RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said.

The cyclist picked up his pace, heading south on 38th St. and through a parkade on 27th Ave. Near 37th St. the cyclist lost control of his bicycle.

"In attempts to avoid the officer, he took off on foot to 25th Ave. where a second officer was waiting (and) tackled him," Molendyk said.

The 25-year-old cyclist was in the possession of heroin, cocaine, meth, clonazepam, and pills. He was also carrying two cannisters of dog spray and over $500 in cash.

"The suspect is looking at charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and obstruct peace officer."

He has since been released on a promise to appear.
