Vermont mayor denounces white supremacist group gathering

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The mayor of Burlington, Vermont, is denouncing a white supremacist organization that gathered at a city park over the weekend.

The Burlington Free Press reports Mayor Miro Weinberger wrote in a statement that “white supremacist groups like Patriot Front” aren’t welcome in Burlington following a rally Saturday at City Hall Park. Patriot Front released a video on Twitter showing members carrying American flags and a banner that read “Reclaim America.”

The Anti-Defamation League describes the Patriot Front as a white supremacist group whose members believe their ancestors conquered America.

A group of about 250 counter-protesters, led by activist Jabari Jones, met in South Burlington earlier Saturday morning in response to social media reports that the Patriot Front would hold a rally in the area. Weinberger commended the anti-racist coalition for promoting “inclusivity and equality.”
