PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Denis Alexeev scored less than a minute into overtime as Russia defeated Team Western Hockey League 3-2 on Monday night in Game 1 of the Canada-Russia Series.
Nikita Li and Danila Kvartalnov scored for Russia in regulation time with Li giving his team a 1-0 lead just 1:13 into the game.
Jansen Harkins of the Prince George Cougars had a first-period goal for Team WHL and Sam Steel of the Regina Pats tied the game 2-2 on a power play in the third period.
Anton Krasotkin made 32 saves for the Russians. Kamloops Blazers goaltender Connor Ingram stopped 18 shots in defeat.
Russia plays Team WHL again on Tuesday before taking on Team OHL for two games in four nights starting Thursday.
Russia then plays Team QMJHL on Nov. 15 and Nov. 17.
