Police: Man shot while speeding toward Florida officer

OVIEDO, Fla. – Police in central Florida have shot and wounded a man they say was revving his engine and trying to run over an officer.

Oviedo police Lt. Heather Capetillo said in a news release that officers on Thursday morning responded to a 911 call where someone whispered “send police,” before hanging up.

Upon arrival, authorities say an officer shot an unidentified driver twice after he revved his engine and drove aggressively toward the officer.

The suspect was shot in the arm and once in the stomach. Police say he underwent surgery and is in stable condition. No officers were injured.

Police have not released the race of either the suspect or the officer.

Capetillo says it’s the first time an Oviedo officer has shot a suspect in at least 30 years.
