Torrential rains, flooding kill 5 in Mexican city of Durango

MEXICO CITY – Flooding from torrential rains overnight in the northern Mexican city of Durango killed five people, the state governor said Friday.

Durango Gov. Jose Rosas Aispuro toured the flood zone and said there were five confirmed dead so far. The State Civil Protection agency tweeted that one victim died when a home collapsed.

“During eight hours it rained 20 per cent of what it normally rains in a whole year,” Aispuro said in comments broadcast by Foro TV.

Civil Protection published photos of rescue workers plucking people from fast-moving waters up to their waists, as well as damaged buildings, a flooded bus terminal and streets left cluttered with mud and debris.

Rosas said the situation was under control Friday. Mexico’s Interior Department declared a state of emergency, and schools were cancelled.
