CALGARY – WestJet Airlines Ltd. (TSX:WJA) has signed a code-share agreement with Hainan Airlines that will see the Chinese carrier place its HU code on WestJet-operated flights.
The agreement builds on an existing interline agreement that has been in place since 2013.
Code-sharing allows an airline to sell tickets on a flight operated by a partner airline, but use its own designator code on those flights.
Hainan plans to offer HU code-shared flights to and from Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, B.C, Prince George, B.C., Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.
It is WestJet’s 16th code-share agreement.
The deal announced Thursday comes as Chinese Premier Li Keqiang makes the first visit to Canada by a Chinese leader in six years.
