Canada’s Ryan Cochrane, Santo Condorelli win gold medals at U.S. Pro Swim Series

OTTAWA – Two-time Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane and Santo Condorelli led a successful weekend for Canada’s Olympic-bound swimmers with gold-medal performances on Sunday at U.S. Pro Swim Series events.

Cochrane, from Victoria, won the men’s 1500-metre freestyle in 15 minutes 9.97 seconds in Santa Clara, Calif. Australia’s Jack McLoughlin clocked 15:19.15 for the silver.

Hilary Caldwell of Surrey, B.C., claimed a silver in the 200 backstroke in 2:09.94 while world champion Emily Seebohm of Australia took the gold in 2:08.57.

Meanwhile in Indianapolis, Condorelli, of Kenora, Ont., clocked 48.34 seconds for gold in the 100 freestyle. Brazil’s Marcelo Chierighini was second in 49.27.

Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., took silver in the 200 backstroke in 2:10.87, just behind American Erin Voss, who won gold with a time of 2:10.87.

Toronto’s Brittany MacLean finished with two silver medals, including Sunday’s 800 freestyle in 8:27.32. American Leah Smith was the winner in 8:24.87. MacLean was also runner-up in Saturday’s freestyle.
