Telefilm Canada supports features with Xavier Dolan, Trailer Park Boys

TORONTO – Projects with Quebec movie maker Xavier Dolan, the Trailer Park Boys and actors Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Green are among those receiving funding from Telefilm Canada.

The federal agency says it’s giving a total of $3.7 million to five features, two in English and three in French, through the Canada Feature Film Fund for the second quarter of 2013-2014.

Among them is “Mommy,” written and directed by 24-year-old Dolan, a Cannes Film Festival favourite.

Anne Dorval, Suzanne Clement and Antoine Olivier Pilon star in the drama, about a mysterious woman who helps out a widowed single mother and her violent son. It’s listed as in production.

Green is in the comedy “Swearnet,” written by and starring Mike Smith, John Paul Tremblay and Robb Wells of “Trailer Park Boys” fame.

Warren Sonoda helms the comedy, in which the actors who play the Trailer Park Boys try to make a comeback by launching the “offensively extreme Internet channel” Swearnet.com. It’s slated for release in August.

Also receiving funding is the thriller “Reasonable Doubt,” starring Jackson and Dominic Cooper.

Peter Howitt directs the Peter A. Dowling script, about an assistant district attorney deeply involved in a fatal hit-and-run case. It’s expected to hit theatres early this year.

The other titles receiving the new funding include the period drama “Corbo,” from writer-director Mathieu Denis, and the family dramedy “La Gang des hors-la-loi,” from director Jean Beaudry and writer Andre Melancon.
