San Francisco Opera to present world premiere of Marco Tutinof’s ‘Two Women’ in June 2015

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Opera will present the world premiere of Marco Tutinof’s “La Ciociara (Two Women)” on June 13, 2015.

The company said Tuesday that the opera based on Alberto Moravia’s novel of the same name will star soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci, tenor Stephen Costello and baritone Mark Delavan. Music director Nicola Luisotti conducts and Francesca Zambello directs in a co-production with the Teatro Regio of Turin, Italy.

Antonacci also will sing in Berlioz’s “Les Troyens (The Trojans)” opening June 7, 2015. Mezzo-sopranos Susan Graham and Sasha Cooke, and tenor Bryan Hymel are also part of the production conducted by Donald Runnicles. The David McVicar staging is co-produced by the Vienna State Opera.

The season opens Sept. 5 with Bellini’s “Norma” and includes Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah,” Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball),” Handel’s “Partenope,” Puccini’s “Tosca” and “La Boheme,” Rossini’s “La Cenerentola (Cinderalla)” and Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro).”

The company also says it has commissioned Bright Sheng to compose “Dream of the Red Chamber” for an autumn 2016 premiere with an English-language libretto by David Henry Hwang, who won a Tony Award for “M. Butterfly.”
