Jakubeit to seek second term

PENTICTON  – Penticton’s mayor will stand for a second term.

Andrew Jakubeit’s stated list of achievements in his first term include advocacy for the $312 million hospital expansion, the approval of 1,169 housing units since 2014, the YES project, downtown revitalization, the lakeshore walkway, relocation of the casino and being recognized as one of Canada’s most entrepreneurial cities.

“I felt it was important to let the community know I’m committed to continuing the work we started during my first term as Mayor. We have the right staff in place and a great community story to share and build on,” Jakubeit said in a press release.

Jakubeit feels the experience he’s gained in his first term will give the community “consistency, stability and the leadership needed to continue the momentum we have generated during our term.”

The Mayor counts the Skaha Park project as his biggest regret, noting there was "a lack of clear process and community engagement that caused two years of conflict.”

He says his biggest challenge moving forward are social issues and finding the balance between supporting those in need and meeting the expectations of residents and local businesses.

Jakubeit says he plans to continue advocating for affordable housing.
