Outdoor activities and Action Fest highlight South Okanagan weekend events

PENTICTON – Pleasant weather is in store for the weekend, just in time for a number of outdoor events taking place around the South Okanagan.

The weekend begins with Summerland Action Fest which runs Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 3.

Join the crowd for three days of live entertainment in Memorial Park in Summerland, including a slo-pitch tournament, the Man of Steel triathlon, a parade and dance and other activities for all ages. See the Summerland Action Fest website for more details.

Experience 10 km of Okanagan scenery and five Penticton craft breweries who are members of the B.C. Ale Trail during the Penticton Beer Run, taking place Saturday, June 1.

The run starts on a hops farm just out of town and utilizes rail trails to Penticton’s waterfront and channel parkway. There are plenty of food and water stops along the way. All net proceeds go to the not for profit Youth Outdoor Recreation Society. Cost is $75. For more information see the Hoodoo Adventures website.

A Breast Cancer Research Fundraiser is being held at the Poplar Grove Wintery on Saturday. The event features a five-course wine paired menu. The wine reception starts at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Call Michael Sicoly for more information at 250-494-8222.

Join the Trail of Okanagan’s Society in a bike ride from the Summerland Bike Hub in Memorial Park along Garnet Valley Road to the Fur Brigade Park lookout on Sunday, June 3.

Food and festivities are available before and after the ride in Memorial Park, with snacks provided. Donations toward the development of the Trail of the Okanagans are accepted. Sign ups at the bike hub before departure.

The event is organized by the Trail of the Okanagans Society, the Summerland Bike to Work Week Committee and the District of Summerland in coordination with the Action Fest Committee. See the Trails of the Okanagans Facebook page for more information.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
