Psychiatrist says suspect insane in deadly wrong-way crash

BURLINGTON, Vt. – A defence psychiatrist says he thinks a Vermont man facing five murder charges after driving the wrong-way on an interstate and crashing into an oncoming vehicle, killing five teenagers, was legally insane at the time of the crime.

Steven Bourgoin has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges in the October 2016 crash on Interstate 89 in Williston.

Bourgoin’s attorneys acknowledge he caused the crash, but say he was insane at the time.

Dr. David Rosmarin said Tuesday that Bourgoin “did not intend to go the wrong direction and kill people.” He said he was undergoing a manic psychotic episode, thought he was in danger and believed he was getting messages through the radio and other devices.
