Prolific Kelowna thief carries knife, threatens security guard, caught again with break-in tools

A homeless Kelowna man who pulled a knife on a security guard who caught him stealing at London Drugs went on to do more shoplifting and threaten more people after being released on bail.

Shane Blair Goodfellow failed to turn up to court on at least two occasions, and when police did catch up with him more than a year later, he had an array of break-in tools on him.

“The arrest revealed three hunting knives, two large bolt cutters, a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a saw blade, and nine circular saw cutting blades,” Crown prosecutor Trevor Sicotte told a Kelowna courtroom Sept. 11.

The court heard that in September 2024, Goodfellow was stopped while trying to leave London Drugs on Harvey Ave, with an electric razor and a male Versace cosmetic set. As the security guard attempted to stop Goodfellow, he pulled a knife and threatened to stab them. The security guard didn’t put up a fight and called the RCMP. 

Goodfellow was arrested shortly afterwards.

After being released, he appears to have laid low and avoided police after failing to show up to court. 

He was picked up again in November 2025 after motioning that he would stab a staff member in a Kelowna No Frills grocery store who suspected him of shoplifting.

Police immediately caught up with him – and discovered all the break-in tools – and he was released on bail again.

Weeks later he was caught stealing four toques from Winners. He placed them in a reusable shopping bag and walked out.

Police arrested him in the parking lot outside.

It’s unclear how long he was in custody, but in February he was alleged to have committed another theft, although Crown prosecutors stayed the charge.

The court heard that since the initial theft from London Drugs two years ago, Goodfellow had spent 60 days at a drug treatment centre but ultimately relapsed and overdosed. Now in prison, Goodfellow is on a methadone program.

Little was heard in court about Goodfellow’s life, only that the 37-year-old suffered from substance abuse and had a four-page criminal record with no “enormous gaps” in it.

He’d previously been convicted for drug trafficking, possessing an imitation firearm, assault, uttering threats, five property-related offences, along with numerous breaches of court orders.

Crown described it as “not the most egregious criminal record” but said it was “concerning.”

“Mr Goodfellow absolutely needs to be deterred from any sort of violence going forward in the future no matter what his circumstances lead him to do,” the Crown said.

Ultimately, Judge Monica McParland sentenced Goodfellow to just over four months’ jail. With time already spent in custody, he has two months and 10 days left to serve.

However, Goodfellow is facing more charges, along with co-accused Jarrett Phillip Browne, for break and enter, theft over $5,000, and disguising his face.

The offence is alleged to have taken place while Goodfellow was out on bail.
