Card tournament and food festival highlight South Okanagan weekend fun

PENTICTON – Penticton plays host to a major card tournament while Osoyoos hosts a major food and film event this weekend.

There’s also some great entertainment at local bars and restaurants, and a free celebration on Main Street starting this afternoon, June 15.

The Peach City Bridge Tournament returns to Penticton this week.

Canada’s largest regional bridge tournament runs until Sunday at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tournament schedule can be viewed here.

Devour: The Food Film Festival takes place in Osoyoos today through to Sunday.

Tickets are available in packages or for individual events, with full weekend packages starting from $369 per person, which includes two nights of accommodation based on quad occupancy. Events include a Friday reception, dance and after party, Saturday chowder smackdown, wine seminars, Saturday evening gala and Sunday long table breakfast, at the Watermark Beach Resort. Sunday also offers independent or guided Similkameen winery tours.

The 300 Main Street block party takes place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, celebrating the completion and reopening of Main Street’s 300 block. Official ribbon cutting ceremony takes place at 6 p.m.

The Downtown Community Market and Penticton Farmers' Market operate on Saturday on Penticton’s Main Street starting at 8:30 a.m. The Farmer’s Market runs until 1 p.m., while the Downtown Community Market goes until 1:30 p.m.

It’s a retro night at Mile Zero Wine Bar on Ellis Street this Saturday.

"Saturday Night Fever at Mile Zero Wine Bar " relives 1977 with music food and drinks of the day.

Neil Osborne appears at The Dream Cafe Saturday at 6 p.m. Osbourne is best known as singer and chief songwriter for the band 54-40 but the musician is also an accomplished producer. Tickets are $35. Show starts at 8 p.m.

Stand up comedian Ali Hassan presents Muslim Interupted at The Dream Cafe on Sunday. Hassan is host of Laugh Out Loud on CBC Radio and has recurring roles in several TV shows. Tickets are $43 and the doors open at 6 p.m with the show starting at 8 p.m.

The Penticton Pistoleras face off against the Smokin' Laces Roller Derby from the Lower Mainland in Roller Derby Ruckus Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Penticton Curling Club. It’s the South Okanagan Roller Derby Association’s third and final home bout of the season. Tickets are $15 at the door.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
