Edmonton man charged with marriage scam, was to get $5,000 from bride
EDMONTON – An Edmonton man has been charged with marriage fraud.
The Canada Border Services Agency alleges Gilbert Leland Platts wed a woman so she could apply for permanent residency in Canada.
The agency alleges Platts was to receive $5,000 for agreeing to the marriage.
Officials say it’s the first time charges have been laid in such a case in Alberta.
Platts is charged with misrepresentation and counselling misrepresentation under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
He faces a maximum fine of $100,000 or up to five years in prison
He is to appear in an Edmonton court on March 20.
