US says its consulting with EU on ending Ukrainian violence, sanctions possible

WASHINGTON – The White House says it is monitoring the volatile situation in Ukraine and will consult with European partners on next steps, possibly including sanctions, to end to the deadly violence.

The European Union has called a meeting of its 28 member countries on Thursday to address Ukraine.

Ben Rhodes, a U.S. national security adviser, says U.S. officials are consulting with the EU on such issues as who should be held responsible for the violence and whether to impose sanctions. Rhodes commented to reporters on Wednesday as President Barack Obama flew to Mexico for meetings with the leaders of Mexico and Canada.

Deadly clashes between police and anti-government protesters in the Ukrainian capital have left at least 25 people dead and hundreds injured, raising fears of a civil war.
