MPs decry Ukrainian violence, call for restraint as riot police deploy live ammo

OTTAWA – Canadian MPs are calling on Ottawa to bring to justice Ukrainian government officials responsible for the deadly violence in Kyiv.

The call comes as protesters were set to gather on Parliament Hill to condemn the clashes between police and anti-government protesters in the Ukrainian capital that have left at least 25 people dead.

In a joint statement, MPs James Bezan and Ted Opitz say they are disgusted by the callous behaviour demonstrated by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his regime.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says Canada is considering a range of diplomatic options to send a message to the Yanukovych government, including targeted sanctions.

The escalating anger over the protests, and the government’s crackdown, has fuelled fears that Ukraine could be sliding toward civil war.

Sanction, which are also being considered by the United States and the European Union, could include a travel ban on leading officials and freezing of assets of the powerful oligarchs who back Yanukovych.
