Israel army fires on suspected Hezbollah-linked militants planting explosives on Syrian border
JERUSALEM – The Israeli military says it has fired on two suspected militants who were planting an explosive device along Israel’s frontier with Syria.
The military says the men were affiliated with the militant Lebanese Hezbollah group. It did not explain how it knew of the men’s ties with the group.
The military says “hits were identified” following the shooting on Wednesday in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.
Hezbollah has said it would retaliate following an Israeli airstrike on its positions inside Lebanon last week. It was not immediately clear if Wednesday’s incident was related.
Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Shiite group committed to Israel’s destruction, battled to a stalemate during a monthlong war in the summer of 2006.
Hezbollah has sent some of its fighters to join the civil war in Syria.
