SAVANNAH, Ga. – Police say a shootout in Georgia has left a slaying suspect dead and an officer hospitalized with several gunshot wounds.
Savannah-Chatham County Interim Police Chief Mark Revenew told news outlets it happened early Tuesday as his officers and U.S. Marshals were searching for a suspect wanted in a Sunday homicide.
Revenew says the suspect shot at the officers, and they returned fire. He says the suspect was critically wounded and later died. The police chief says the wounded officer was shot several times but is expected to recover.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the slain suspect as 20-year-old Ricky Jerome Boyd. The officer’s name was not immediately released.
Revenew says the shooting investigation has been handed over to the GBI.
