Marois wants federal government to pay for relocating Lac-Megantic rail line

NOTRE-DAME-DES-BOIS, Que. – Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois is insisting the federal government pick up the complete tab for moving a rail line that cuts through Lac-Megantic.

Forty-seven people were killed and most of the community’s downtown was destroyed last July after a fuel-laden train derailed and exploded.

Marois says moving the rail line falls under federal jurisdiction.

She is estimating the cost of relocating the train tracks at as much as $175 million.

The PQ leader made the comments as she announced her party’s candidate for the local riding in the April 7 election.

The federal government has agreed to a 50-50 split with Quebec on the cleanup costs.

Ottawa pledged $95 million last November to help pay for decontamination of the disaster scene, an amount that was on top of $60 million promised earlier in the year.

The total cost of the catastrophe is still being determined and the governments estimate it will be years before a final figure is reached.
