Who’s afraid of PKP? Media mogul Peladeau’s local political rival unfazed

ST-JEROME, Que. – A rookie Quebec politician says he’s unfazed by the imposing task of trying to beat superstar Parti Quebecois candidate Pierre Karl Peladeau.

Patrice Charbonneau warns that the multimillionaire media baron should not underestimate him as they square off in a riding north of Montreal in Quebec’s April 7 election.

The 43-year-old real-estate agent tells The Canadian Press he’s a local guy who knows the issues — which gives him an advantage over the Quebecor Media Inc. owner.

Charbonneau also says he hopes to battle Peladeau in a local candidates’ debate.

PQ Leader Pauline Marois has shaken up the election campaign by naming one of Canada’s biggest media moguls as her candidate in Saint-Jerome — a swing riding key to the party’s drive for a majority government.

Charbonneau will try to hang on to Saint-Jerome for his Coalition party — which won the district from PQ in the last election.
