Police: 1 man, 1 woman died after motorist plowed into crowd at South By Southwest festival

AUSTIN, Texas – Austin police say that the two people killed when a suspected drunken driver crashed through barricade at the South by Southwest festival were a woman on a moped and a man on a bicycle.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference Thursday morning that officials’ initial report that two people on a moped were killed was incorrect.

Acevedo said the victims were a woman from Austin and a man from the Netherlands. He did not give the names of the two victims, nor the 23 people who were injured.

The suspect faces two counts of capital murder and multiple counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.

Acevedo said it was an “intentional act,” and that formal charges will be filed this afternoon.
