Mounties protecting Harper report intimidation, harassment by senior officer

OTTAWA – An internal RCMP review says some Mounties who help protect the prime minister report feeling intimidated and harassed by their supervising officer.

The management report, obtained by Radio-Canada television, calls the examples of conflict in the workplace disturbing.

It says the anxiety some Mounties feel around the officer in charge of the detail could be putting Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s safety in jeopardy.

The RCMP responded to the report by saying it would take action to improve the workplace atmosphere.

The review also pointed to staffing problems with the unit, which is perpetually underfunded.

Officers work long hours and book a lot of overtime, which the report says suggests a deeper problem of insufficient numbers.
