Royal Canadian Mint unveils silver coin to mark Calgary Stampede’s 100th

CALGARY – The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a new silver coin to mark the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede.

The coin, which is 99.9 per cent pure silver, features a cowboy riding a bucking bronco and was introduced today at a news conference in Calgary.

Only 10,000 of the limited edition coins will be put into circulation and will cost $69.95.

Calgary Stampede vice-chairman Bob Thompson says the coin is a tribute to Calgary’s rich, cultural heritage.

Patrick Hadsipantelis (HAD’-suh-PAN’-TEL’-us) of the Royal Canadian Mint says it’s not unusual to craft coins to celebrate special occasions.

He says it’s unlikely they will be in circulation for very long.
