Brevard Zoo announces births of Saki monkey and a king vulture

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A baby white-faced saki monkey and a king vulture chick are the newest residents at Brevard Zoo.

Florida Today (http://on.flatoday.com/ODYUZv ) reports the monkey was born Feb. 27 and the baby vulture arrived on Feb. 10.

The baby monkey’s mother is 10-year-old Chuckie, who came to the zoo in 2007. Her father is a 22-year-old named Yuki who came to Florida from the Denver Zoo that same year.

Zoo officials say white-faced saki monkeys are native to northern and central South America.

Zoo spokeswoman Olivia Wiggins says they don’t yet know the gender of the vulture, born to Queenie and BB King. They’ve doubled the feedings of the vulture parents because they regurgitate food directly into the chick’s mouth or on the nearby ground.
