Canada advances to quarter-finals of Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament

HONG KONG – Canada has advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2014 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, marking the fourth straight stop in the series that it has made it to the final eight of the elite Cup competition.

Canada, which is currently ninth in the series standings, will play No. 5 Australia in Sunday’s quarter-finals. Unbeaten Australia won Pool B.

After defeating No. 14 Portugal 35-7 Friday, the Canadian men beat No. 8 Argentina 14-7 and lost to No. 4 England 14-12 Saturday in a game that Canada led 12-7 midway though the second half.

John Moonlight and Philip Mack scored tries against England with captain Nathan Hirayama adding a conversion. England edged Canada 14-10 last weekend in the quarter-finals in Tokyo.

Earlier Saturday, Canada trailed 7-0 against Argentina before rallying on tries by Nanyak Dala and Hirayama.

England won Pool C ahead of Canada and will play South Africa.

Defending champion Fiji beat Kenya 43-5 to top Pool A and face the U.S., who advanced as Pool D runners-up on points difference ahead of Samoa and Scotland.

Pool D winner New Zealand plays Wales.
