Swimmer from Puerto Rico drowns in New Hampshire lake

NOTTINGHAM, N.H. – A man from Puerto Rico has drowned while swimming in a New Hampshire lake.

The state’s Fish and Game Department says it received a call Tuesday morning about the man’s drowning death at Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham.

It says 21-year-old Angel Cruz had tried to swim from the shore of the lake to a small island 150 feet away. It says Cruz made it almost halfway but began to have difficulty swimming.

Witnesses say Cruz was struggling to stay afloat. They say he went underwater twice and resurfaced but then went under a third time without resurfacing.

A Fish and Game Department dive team recovered Cruz’s body Tuesday afternoon in about 12 feet of water.
