MONTREAL – A man seriously wounded in a shooting during a Parti Quebecois election night victory rally in 2012 is suing for damages.

Dave Courage, a stagehand, was one of two people struck by a single bullet that left one man dead.

The shooting occurred on Sept. 4, 2012, at a venue where then premier-designate Pauline Marois was delivering a victory speech following the PQ’s minority government win.

Courage is seeking $295,000 in damages from the Quebec government and L’Equipe Spectra, the owner of the venue.

In a claim filed in Quebec Superior Court on Wednesday, Courage argues that both failed in their obligation to ensure his safety that night.

His colleague, Denis Blanchette, was killed by the same bullet that seriously injured Courage as both men stood near a back doorway to the downtown Metropolis nightclub.

Courage says he is suffering from post-traumatic stress and psychological scars that have prevented him from returning to work.

He says the harrowing incident has also had an impact on his social and family life.

The man charged in the incident, Richard Henry Bain, will have a criminal trial early in 2015 on a number of charges, including first-degree murder.
