Former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre to undergo knee surgery next week
TORONTO – Georges St-Pierre is scheduled to undergo knee surgery next week.
The former UFC welterweight champion, currently on hiatus from mixed martial arts but still training with an eye to a future return, revealed last week that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a workout.
On Thursday, in a text to The Canadian Press, the Montreal fighter confirmed the surgery will take place next week although a specific day had yet to be set.
The operation will be done by Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles-based surgeon who did reconstructive surgery on GSP’s other knee in December 2011. ElAttrache also looked after NFL star Tom Brady’s knee in 2009.
St-Pierre vacated his title last December saying he needed time away from the sport. But he kept training.
The 32-year-old fighter has said he plans to return to MMA but has not provided a timeline.
