Former gang leader describes inner workings of violent gang at B.C. murder trial
VANCOUVER – A former gang leader who has become a co-operating witness at a high-profile murder trial in Vancouver is describing the inner workerings of the gang he founded.
Michael Le (Lee) is the latest witness at a trial into the fatal shootings of six people, including two innocent bystanders, in a highrise apartment in Surrey, B.C., in October 2007.
Le pleaded guilty to conspiracy midway through the trial late last year and is now testifying against Matthew Johnston and Cody Haevischer (HA’-visher).
Le says he started trafficking drugs when he was 18 and eventually started the Red Scorpions with another man as his dial-a-dope operations expanded throughout the Vancouver area.
Gang members were constantly worried about being listened to, adopting nicknames and using code words for drugs, such as saying movie instead of kilogram.
Le says Johnston was an early member of the gang and vouched for Haevischer when he joined.
