Independent Investigations Office says they’ve ‘learned a lot’ while investigating officer-involved shooting in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – The province's police watchdog is continuing its investigation into a police-involved shooting in a rural area of Kamloops.

Chief Civilian Director of the Independent Investigations Office, Ron MacDonald, says the team has "learned a lot of information" since they began investigating last Saturday's shooting in Rose Hill.

MacDonald says the office has interviewed several police and civilian witnesses in the case.

A man was found deceased after an exchange of gunfire on Sept. 14 after police responded to a report of a suspicious and possibly impaired man last seen near a camper trailer roughly three kilometres past the Rose Hill subdivision in east Kamloops.

No officers or civilians were injured at the scene of the shooting. The Independent Investigations Office says the man who died was in his early 30s, however they cannot confirm whether he was a nearby resident as it could identify him.

MacDonald says the Independent Investigations Office completed a two-day forensic investigation of the scene, and gathered information from police including some video and radio calls.

"We want to make sure we have the whole picture before we disclose our findings and that does take some time," MacDonald says.

The goal of the office in this investigation, and all investigations, is to determine whether or not a police officer's actions led to serious harm or death.
