US Court won’t hear man’s appeal of Mexico extradition

MEXICO CITY – U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has declined to take up an appeal by a Chinese-Mexican businessman fighting extradition from the United States to face drug charges in Mexico.

A lawyer for businessman Zhenli Ye Gon said Wednesday there could be further appeals.

Lawyer Greg Smith has said in the past that he could seek a stay from another justice, even if Roberts refused.

Ye Gon has been jailed in the United States since July 2007, when authorities seized more than $205 million from his Mexico City mansion, one of the largest drug-related cash seizures ever.

Ye Gon claimed chemicals he imported were for use in legitimate prescription drugs. He fought to stay in the United States because he said he couldn’t receive a fair trial in Mexico.
