Heavy snow expected on Coquihalla, Okanagan Connector

Another burst of winter is on its way for Southern Interior highways, with special weather statements being issued for the Coquihalla Highway and the Okanagan Connector.

Environment Canada says in its statement that the affected areas include the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Kamloops, and the Okanagan Connector from Merritt to Kelowna.

Bursts of heavy snow are expected this afternoon and evening over southern highway passes. Heavy bands of snow are expected to develop later today as a low pressure system from the coast clashes with a cold front in the Interior.

This will produce localized heavy snowfall with rapid accumulations and sudden reduction in visibilities, Environment Canada says.

Drivers using Highway 5 and Highway 97C this afternoon and evening are advised to prepare for rapidly accumulating snow and poor visibility. Expect and prepare for winter driving conditions.

Provincial regulations went into affect yesterday, Oct. 1, making it mandatory for snow tires to be in use on some highways.
