Telecom watchdog satisfied Rogers have stopped throttling Internet gamers

GATINEAU, Que. – The federal telecommunications watchdog says it is confident Rogers Communications is no longer slowing down gaming activities on the Internet.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) began investigating Rogers in 2011 when it received a complaint from the Canadian Gamers Organization.

The group said Rogers had been throttling or slowing down traffic related to online games, which the company eventually admitted.

Throttling time-sensitive traffic such as peer-to-peer games is prohibited unless the CRTC gives an Internet service provider permission in advance.

The commission conducted a technical investigation, and was satisfied Rogers followed through with its commitment to stop its traffic management practices by the end of 2012.
