Jordanian foreign minister says his kingdom’s ambassador abducted in Libya has been released
AMMAN, Jordan – Jordan’s foreign minister says the kingdom’s ambassador abducted in Libya last month has been released and is on his way home.
Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh gave no other details in announcing the release of Ambassador Fawaz al-Etan on Tuesday.
Al-Etan was taken by gunmen from his vehicle in central Tripoli near the Jordanian Embassy on April 15.
A week later, Jordan released a Libyan serving a life sentence for a plan to carry out a suicide bombing at the Amman airport. Jordanian officials at the time would not say whether the release was connected to al-Etan’s abduction.
Abductions have been rife in Libya since the country’s 8-month civil war ended with Moammar Gadhafi’s killing in October 2011. Diplomats and journalists have been among those targeted in the kidnappings.
