Federal appeals court that blocked Arizona abortion rules will hear arguments in San Francisco

PHOENIX – Lawyers for the state of Arizona are taking their fight to uphold the nation’s strictest restrictions on the use of abortion drugs to federal court in San Francisco.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hold a hearing Tuesday after blocking the rules last month.

The regulations limit where and how women can take abortion-inducing drugs and block their use after the seventh week of pregnancy. Women can now use the drugs into nine weeks of pregnancy.

Lawyers for Arizona want the court to allow the rules to be implemented, while attorneys for Planned Parenthood Arizona want the injunction kept in place.

State health officials released the restrictions in January to implement part of a 2012 law.
