Harper introduces legislation dubbed Quanto’s Law to protect police dogs

EDMONTON – Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Edmonton on Monday to meet with police canine units and to announce the introduction of new legislation dubbed Quanto’s Law.

The proposed legislation calls for serious consequences for anyone who harms police, service and Canadian Armed Forces animals.

Quanto was an Edmonton police service dog who was stabbed to death while trying to apprehend a fleeing suspect last October.

The legislation, promised in the 2013 throne speech, proposes Criminal Code amendments to impose a minimum six-month jail sentence for those who kill police dogs.

The maximum sentence would be five years.
