India counts votes in massive national elections as Hindu nationalist party eyes win

NEW DELHI – Vote counting is underway in India following the country’s massive national elections as exit polls predict victory for the pro-business, Hindu nationalist opposition party.

India’s Election Commission is expected to announce all the results later Friday.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party campaigned on promises of a revival in economic growth. There is widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling Congress party, which has been in power for a decade.

There was a record turnout in this year’s elections, with 66.38 per cent of the 814 million eligible voters casting ballots during the six-week contest, which was held in several stages across the country. Turnout in the 2009 elections was 58.13 per cent.
