Sentencing day for man convicted in ‘nanny cam’ beating

NEWARK, N.J. – A New Jersey man faces sentencing Wednesday for a brutal home invasion beating that was caught on a home surveillance camera.

Shawn Custis, of Newark, was convicted June 1 of aggravated assault, robbery and other crimes for the 2013 attack in Millburn.

A woman and her 3-year-old daughter were home at the time. The woman suffered injuries but survived and testified against Custis. The child wasn’t injured.

The beating lasted several minutes, and the attacker could be seen on the video beating and kicking the woman and throwing her down a flight of stairs.

Custis’s attorney argued during the trial the police investigation was biased because a white officer responding to the crime scene was heard on the video camera using a racial slur.
