Holiday-themed activities high on the list of weekend things to do in Penticton

PENTICTON – Christmas takes centre stage with the holiday season rapidly approaching, but if it’s too early to get into the holiday spirit, there are other things to do this weekend.

The 2nd annual Ashley Home Store Penticton Curling Classic takes place Friday, Nov. 23 through Monday, Nov. 26 at the Penticton Curling Club with 24 teams from Canada and Scotland competing in a round-robin tournament. Tickets available at the Penticton Curling Club or call 250-492-5647. Prices range from $15 for a one-day pass to $70 for the four-day event.

Country music star Aaron Pritchett entertains at the Penticton Lakeside Resort on Friday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. The concert is in support of the Penticton Youth Resource Centre. Tickets are $40 plus a $4 facility fee and taxes and can be purchased at the Penticton Lakeside Resort front desk.

The Leir House Christmas Craft Show is being presented just in time for those last minute unique gift items. There will be numerous vendors with something for everyone, including pets. The show runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Leir Cultural Centre.

Santa arrives by fire truck at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. Free activities for the kids are planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. along with photos with Santa from 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photos are $25 and come with a USB flash drive and three photos.

The 7th annual Santa Rec Run is taking place on Saturday, Nov. 24 starting at 6 p.m. at LocoLanding Adventure Park. Participants can choose from a 2.5, 5 or 10 km route in this fund raising effort for local youth outdoor programs. All money raised goes to the Youth Outdoor Recreation Society in support of outdoor recreation programs at schools in Penticton and surrounding area. The cost is $15 per person or $45 for a family.

The Children’s showcase: Twas the night before Christmas is a reworking of the classic poem with goofy antics and witty story twists. Inter-active storytellers relate the story of Santa, who lost his sack of presents while Old man winter plots to stop his deliveries on Sunday, Nov. 25 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The performance takes place at the Centre Stage Theatre in Summerland and tickets are $12.

Steve Arstad

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
