Heavily armed police storm North Okanagan home to end standoff

ENDERBY – A 42-year-old North Okanagan man is facing several charges after a standoff with RCMP in Enderby earlier this week.

It all started when RCMP were called to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home on a rural property in Enderby just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, according to an RCMP media release.

An armed man was making threats and damaging property so officers surrounded the home and tried to make contact with the distraught man, police say. The emergency response team, a police dog team and negotiators were called in.

North Okanagan RCMP media relations officer Const. Kelly Brett says in the release that after around three hours of trying to “establish contact” with the man, members of the emergency response team made “a dynamic entry” into the home.

The suspect was hurt during the arrest and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, she says. Police do not say what the nature of the suspect’s injuries were or what kind of weapon he was armed with, although he is facing firearm related charges.

“Every officer deployed to this call did exactly what they are trained to do in these types of high-risk situations,” Brett says.

She says the suspect was a danger to himself, police and the community.

A 42-year-old man from Mara remains in police custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance on charges of assault, uttering threats and careless use of firearms.
