Group opposes sales tax for Arkansas Marshals Museum

FORT SMITH, Ark. – A group in Fort Smith has announced its opposition to a proposed temporary sales tax to help finance exhibits in a U.S. Marshals Museum in the western Arkansas city.

The Times Record reports that Citizens Against Unfair Taxes met Thursday with about 90 people to discuss the proposed 1-cent sales tax increase for nine months.

Residents will vote on the issue during a special election in March.

Joey McCutchen said he supports the museum, but that it should secure a loan or seek more private funding.

Museum Foundation President Jim Dunn more than $35 million in cash and land donations have been received so far, but about $16 million more is needed to complete exhibits.

Dunn says the museum has been in the works for nearly a decade and is scheduled to open next summer.
