Smoke in elevator shaft at Newark airport control tower forces evacuation, snarls flights

NEWARK, N.J. – Authorities have evacuated the control tower at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport because of a report of smoke in the elevator shaft.

Federal Aviation Administration deputy assistant administrator Laura Brown says air controllers are managing air traffic at an alternate site.

The FAA has issued a ground stop, causing delays for flights leaving and landing at Newark airport.
