Enbridge to apply Michigan leak lessons to Northern Gateway, soon-to-be CEO says

CALGARY – The soon-to-be CEO of Enbridge (TSX:ENB) says the company will apply lessons it learned from a pipeline spill in Michigan two years ago to future projects — including the controversial Northern Gateway proposal.

Al Monaco says the company hasn’t just been sitting around since Line 6B ruptured in July 2010, spilling some three million litres of crude.

Monaco made his remarks a day after report by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said Enbridge (TSX:ENB) handled the spill like “Keystone Kops.”

The report said Enbridge knew about corrosion on the pipeline five years before it leaked and responded slowly and ineptly in the aftermath of the spill.

Monaco says some employees lost their jobs following the Michigan incident.

Monaco takes the helm of Enbridge once Pat Daniel retires later this year.
