Thailand’s court rules on crucial verdict, easing fears of political crisis

BANGKOK – Thailand’s constitutional Court has dismissed a controversial case that alleged ruling party lawmakers trying to amend the constitution were trying to overthrow the monarchy.

The ruling immediately diffuses Thailand’s latest political crisis and eases fears that the party of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra might be dissolved.

The court issued the compromise decision Friday, saying the 2007 charter could not be entirely rewritten but could be amended section by section.

Critics see the current constitution as undemocratic because it was created in the wake of a 2006 army coup.
