TORONTO, ONTARIO, – He won the Memorial Cup and Stanley Cup — two of hockey’s most coveted trophies — but neither qualifies as the crowning achievement of Ron Ellis’s career.
He says they pale in comparison to helping Canada beat Russia in the 1972 Summit Series.
Ellis will be among 14 members of the ’72 Canadian team who will return to Russia next month to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic series.
The players will arrive in Moscow on Monday and spend six days in Russia.
The highlight of their visit will be an alumni game Wednesday against members of the Russian squad they faced 40th years ago.
On Sept. 22, the ’72 Canadian team will be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame
