Oliver RCMP arrest knife-wielding suspect involved in two robberies

OLIVER — A man connected to two robberies this month in Oliver has been arrested by RCMP.

Joshua Penner has been arrested in connection with two robberies that occurred on Main Street on July 4 and July 12, according to an RCMP media release issued today, July 24.

Oliver police say on July 4 at 10:20 p.m., a man with a mask over his face entered the Chevron Gas Station on Main Street wielding a large knife and demanded money. The man was given less than $100 and several packs of cigarettes before he left the store.

Approximately one week later on July 12, police say at around 6:45 p.m. a man with his face covered entered the Oliver Family Grocery on Main Street wielding a large knife and demanded money. Officers say the man was wearing dark clothing. During the incident, police say the cashier was able to pull the mask the suspect was wearing to briefly see his face. The suspect was given a small amount of cash before he left.

An RCMP member who had the knowledge of the previous robbery at the Chevron gas station along with the description of the robber was able to identify the suspect.

Penner is new to the community of Oliver, police say. He was arrested on July 12 and charged with multiple offences. He has been released from court with conditions, including to no longer be a resident of Oliver.

Both incidents are still under investigation.
